Why 7.8mm is the number that matters on an RM 67-02
Ultra-thin Richard Mille builds live and die on case profile. What 7.8mm means across 67-02 versions, why a caliper in the photograph matters, and how we check profile before dispatch.
The RM 67-02 is the thinnest watch in this catalogue, and thickness is the one specification that a photograph can prove and a description cannot. That is why our QC set for this reference starts with a caliper.
Why the class of 67-02 builds splits on thickness
Versions of the 67-02 circulate at different case heights, and the differences are measured in fractions of a millimetre that turn into large visual differences on the wrist. A build that puts the case at the correct ultra-thin height while keeping the movement functional is materially harder to make than one that adds height to fit the same internals. The trade-off shows up in the price and in the profile.
What is the other compromise?
The 67-02 has a visible gear train around seven o'clock. On cheaper versions that train is a fixed decoration. On better ones it rotates. Buyers end up choosing between a thin case with a static gear and a thicker case with a moving one, so a version that delivers both is a different product rather than a marketing variation.
How do we check it on your watch?
Three things, photographed before payment: the case profile on a caliper with the reading in frame, the caseback open with the spring ring visible, and a short clip of the dial with the watch running so the gear train can be seen moving. Where a maker publishes a thickness figure, that figure is a claim about their output; the caliper reading is a measurement of the watch you are buying.
What do we not do?
We do not publish a thickness figure per version without having measured it, and we do not quote the genuine watch's dimensions as if they described the build. If a source cannot measure, we do not list the reference as available in that class.
The RM 67-02 page lists the makers we source it from and the class each one sits in.
